audio excerpt for - HEARTSONG

Heartsong by Lynn Ames is a contemporary romance that might just make you believe in love at first sight, even in the midst of grief.

Danica Warren is stepping back into the spotlight after losing her longtime partner in a climbing accident three years ago. The former Senator has written a book about her experiences that was the basis of a blockbuster film, and she’s now regularly paid to speak to large groups of people. While she’s delivering a speech to the Credit Union National Association, a woman catches her eye and suddenly she’s feeling something she hasn’t ever felt, even with Sandy.

Chase Crosley can’t explain it. She knows she’s never met Danica Warren before, and yet she’s drawn to her in a way she can’t ignore. Every minute in her presence is more vibrant than all the ones before them and she finds herself reaching out to connect after the convention, hoping against hope to get through to Danica. Despite Danica’s continuing grief, they quickly forge a deep connection, but can their love stand up against a crisis when it comes to their door?

The Characters

I didn’t think Lynn Ames could write characters I would love as much as Dara and Rebecca, and boy did she ever prove me wrong. I so enjoyed watching Danica and Chase come together and work through their overwhelming feelings. Danica doesn’t understand how she can already feel so much more for Chase than she ever did for Sandy in their 18 years together, and her grief at being able to save everyone in her climbing party except for Sandy is an ever present backpack of rocks. Chase takes an immediate break from her workaholic ways to spend time with Danica just to see if what between them is real, which is so unlike her that it leaves her friends and coworkers shocked. They’re beautiful together and I loved seeing them get to know each other, building a solid foundation beyond their immediate attraction.

The Writing Style

Heartsong is one of the few instalove stories that just works for me. I never doubted Chase and Danica’s love, and their chemistry crackles off the page. I wondered if things got a little overwrought around the crisis, but thinking about it… I don’t see how else they could have possibly responded to that. It’s a scary, upsetting thing, and if ever there’s a time to make it damn clear that you love your partner, that’s one of them.

The Pros

Everything? I loved the characters and how they got together, and I was so happy with how their story ended.

The Cons

I was getting all geared up to come into this review and rant that it has the same con that I had for The Price of Fame. Like, really? AGAIN? Just as I was thinking through how I’d tell all you wonderful readers about how I’m team Danica, I was more pleased than I can say to see everyone tell off Chase and the story resolved in a way that left me very, very happy. So no, I don’t have any cons except maybe that I want to read more about Danica and Chase.

The Conclusion

I loved Heartsong just as much as I loved All That Lies Within, and that’s saying a lot. It’s a beautifully emotional romance that I highly recommend.
